The Best IEP Meeting Ever!

Draft IEP

I received the draft IEP a few days before the IEP meeting. Ordinarily I would be concerned if I received a draft IEP without first having a meeting with my son's case manager. But we are preparing for the FINAL IEP Transition:…

New Resource for English-Spanish Translation of Education & Early Intervention Terms (IDEA)

The OSEP Spanish Glossary of IDEA terms is a tool for translating the specialized terms and jargon found in education and early intervention from English to Spanish.  This glossary was developed by the Region 1 Parent Technical Assistance Center@SPAN under a cooperative agreement with the US Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs.  It provides translators with a list of agreed-upon Spanish translations that are to be used across regions and cultures, to minimize the… Continue

Choosing a TA&D vocabulary

Over the past several  years, TACC has consulted with many center staff , including OSEP, across the network to create a common vocabulary that all of us find useful and meaningful. Where there are several terms, we have chosen the term that is most used and understood across the network.  For instance, “employment” rather than “jobs” – “diversity” over “culturally diverse”. You have helped us add words that reflect your work and to remove the ones that are not so meaningful. Thank you to…

Leadership for Equity and Excellence Forum - in Arizona?

You might be wondering who thought it would be a good idea to hold an Equity Forum in Arizona in 2011?  We’ve asked ourselves that same question.  Across the United States and around the world, we often hear public debates that perpetuate individual and student group deficits as they relate to access, participation and performance in education. In some instances, local governments have been the drivers of legislation that takes a position contrary to educational equity, which makes…

RTI: Thoughtful, Effective Practice or “One More Thing”?

In working with educators through our various projects, I hear a lot of different viewpoints on Response to Intervention (RTI).  Many states are encouraging districts to focus on RTI approaches in an effort to improve state assessment outcomes for groups that have historically not scored well on these tests (e.g., students with disabilities, English language learners, students in particular racial/ethnic groups). Districts are implementing mandatory…

Whiteness Studies and Education: Making the Familiar Strange by Zeus Leonardo

Since the late 1980s, education has witnessed the creation of a new subfield of study called “Whiteness Studies.” Since the arrival of Peggy McIntosh’s (1989) essay on white privilege, David Roediger’s (1991) documentation of the history of the white working class in the U.S., and Ruth Frankenberg’s (1993) interviews showcasing white women’s vacillation between evading and recognizing race, a veritable explosion of writings centering whiteness gives educators a new arsenal for analyzing… Continue

Controlled vocabulary - pre-determined terms

There is a list of terms posted in the document section on the left side of the main page. This is the latest version of terms that will be used to tag content in the new TA&D network data collection tool.

These terms are grouped into several categories - some say facets - that describe what the content is "about".

Education - hopefully, everything that is tagged will have an educational concept

Disability - some content will also have a… Continue
